How Mommy Met Daddy

This import may be an eye-opener for children who just assume that their parents have always been together.

Narrating in a child’s voice and using color schemes that alternate between pale grays and vivid reds and oranges according to the character being depicted, Grossmann-Hensel introduces a compulsively neat young shopkeeper who only sells black-and-white things, and a seamstress so wild and disorganized that her store looks like a garbage heap.

One day the two literally bump into each other and suffer such disorientation that they both must visit the doctor. Seeing them together, the savvy doctor prescribes “lots of time together and plenty of fresh air. You’ll feel better in no time.”

And so it turns out—particularly after the two combine stores and figure out that they’re in love. The main characters are adults, but there’s a fanciful air to the whole episode that will appeal to a younger audience. (Picture book. 6-8)
